BETONG: Many parents here are still ignorant about education opportunities for their children, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.
To enlighten them, he called on the Education Department, Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM), SM Vokasional Betong and SMK Datuk Patinggi Kedit to organise relevant seminars.
“This (seminars) is needed so that all rural parents know that the government have built educational facilities in Betong for their children’s benefit,” he said before handing out special aids to pre-schools during a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2011 PMR Student Excellent Award at MARA Junior Science College here yesterday.
Jabu, who is Minister for Rural Development and Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture, said parents here were lucky as there were various educational facilities available to enable their children to study in their own hometown.
On the special aid, he hoped that they would further encourage students to achieve excellent results, besides helping to reduce their parents’ financial burden.
He advised students to uphold a high level of discipline and integrity as they were the future leaders of the country.
Later, he presented a government grant of RM10,000 to Badan Muafakat MRSM Betong, which is in collaboration with the college, to implement the I-Lead Programme and other activities.
The programme was meant to help students excel in their academic pursuits.
Jabu also handed out excellence awards to 74 PMR students who scored A’s.
Among those present were Betong Resident Datu Romie Sigan Daniel, state MARA director Shazali Salleh, principal of MRSM Betong Zabidin Bedut and president of Muafaka MRSM Betong Wilson Entebang.
