KANOWIT: A total of 5,185 Primary 1 to Form 5 students in the Kanowit parliamentary constituency received their RM100 special school aid totalling RM518,500 on Friday.
Kanowit Member of Parliament Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang presented the aid to SK Saint Francis Xavier headmaster Andrew Mail Sangong, who received it on behalf of all 38 schools here.
There are 35 primary and three secondary schools in Kanowit.
In his speech, Aaron thanked the government for the one-off payment, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the tabling of Budget 2012.
“The people must know that there is no political agenda behind this financial aid. It is not because the 13th general election is near as alleged by the opposition,” said Aaron.
He said the government is sincere in helping the people, especially by giving out the assistance to ease the burden of parents with more than one school-going child.
Besides the RM100 assistance, he said, the government is also giving out RM500 one-off aid to households with a monthly income of RM3,000 and below.
The assistance totalling RM 1.8 billion would benefit 3.4 million households.
“This will include people in rural areas,” he said. Among those present at the function were Acting Kanowit District Officer Ibrahim Kipli, Kanowit police chief DSP Ismail Mahmud, Kanowit Information Department chief Wan Mohd Zuki and Kanowit District Education officer Berita Sabang
