Miri Orchestra and Choir Society celebrates 10th anniversary

MIRI: The Miri Orchestra and Choir Society (MOC), formed 10 years ago, has been recognised as a major player in the music scene here.

It is in keeping with its core objectives of promoting music and raising the standards of music among its members and the community.

MOC was founded by Siwen Wong in 1998 and established as a non-profit voluntary organisation in 2002 under the patronage of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Dr. Loh Yunn Hua, and Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdullah.

Its current president Lily Chong said for its youth members, MOC offered a healthy and constructive alternative to meet, learn, appreciate, acquire and practice their musical talents.

MOC provides a platform to discover or develop hidden musical talents.

To celebrate this milestone, MOC has teamed up with the Headmasters of the Government-Aided schools in Miri to stage a Charity Musical Concert on July 7.

“The aims of this concert are to celebrate our 10 splendid years of success in Miri and to raise funds to assist in the musical and cultural club activities of 12 of the government-aided primary schools in Miri.”

“This is part of our community service project and hoped that the public will support us by buying the tickets. Last year, we did one for the Headmasters’ Council,” Lily told The Borneo Post yesterday.

She assured that the two-hour concert would be an entertaining evening for everyone, adding that music Instructor Yap Ling of Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra and Resident Orchestra Conductor James Lau of MOC would perform a medley of songs spanning from classical, folk, contemporary to pop.

Guest Soprano soloist from Kuala Lumpur, Bui Yik Ling, and TV9 Idola Kecil 2010 soloist Shazlin Salamat would also be performing apart from the Miri Orchestra and Choir led by Resident Choir Conductor Jonathan Wong, Choir of SMK Baru Miri, and young musicians from SJK (C) Chung Hua Miri and SJK (C) Chung Hua Krokop.

The Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin has been invited to officiate at the opening of the concert.

It will be held at Dewan Suarah Miri and proceeds raised will be donated to 12 government-aided primary schools in Miri.

Tickets priced at RM20,RM30,RM50 are now on sale and obtainable from Lily who can be contacted at 019-8745539 or Rennie (secretary) at 014-2877715, or other any committee member.
